Breastfeeding Info
Breastfeeding is is the natural process whereby a a young child is fed with breast milk directly from female human breasts as opposed to feeding an infant milk formula from a bottle. Babies have a natural sucking reflex that enables them to suck and swallow the milk coming directly from the breasts. It is recommended that children be breastfed within one hour of being born, and then exclusively breastfed for the first 6 months. After this it is good to keep breastfeeding until around age two in combination with age-appropriate, nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods.
Some working mothers express milk to be used while their child is being cared for by others.
Breastfeeding was the rule in ancient times up to recent history, and babies were carried with the mother and fed as required.
Breastfeeding promotes health and well-being for both the mother and infant and helps to prevent disease. Longer breastfeeding has also been associated with better mental health through childhood through to adolescence.
Not all the properties of breast milk are fully understood, but its nutrient content is relatively stable. Breast milk is made from nutrients in the mother's bloodstream and bodily stores. Breast milk contains a banaced amount of sugar, fat, water, and protein required for a baby's proper growth and development.
During breastfeeding, antibodies pass to the baby via the milk. This is one of the most important features of colostrum, the breast milk created for newborns. The main target for these antibodies are microorganisms in the baby's intestine. Also, breast milk contains several anti-infective factors such as bile salt stimulated lipase (that prevents certain amoebic infections) and also lactoferrin which has the ability to inhibit the growth of many non-beneficial intestinal bacteria.)
There are certain natural health remedies that can help alleviate the discomfort the feeding mother experiences in her breasts. There are also dietary supplements aimed at promoting the integrity of the breast milk (ensuring it has the right nutrient content/balance.)
